~ Chapter 30 ~
Derek glared at Tobin as he entered the kitchen with Xan. Derek knew it wasnât fair to be jealous of Tobin, but he wanted to be the only one who gave Xan attention. She intrigued him, and her secrets kept him awake, wondering, thinking, pondering⦠What was it about her that made him want to forget Megan? Or his connection to Heather? Derek didnât understand the strong bond between him and Heather, but it was something completely different than how he felt for Xan or Megan.
âIâm heading out.â Tobin said to Xan.
She nodded, and Derek realized Tobin had spoken to them both. âSure.â
Tobin left.
Derek couldnât take his eyes off Xanâs crystal-blue ones as she slowly brought porridge to her mouth in her spoon. There was something in the gleam of the blue which made him want to kiss her as he realized they were more silver-blue than crystal-blue.
She looked up, and her face blushed scarlet. âWhat?â
Derek had to clear his throat. âSorry.â
She groaned and looked him in the eye. âI have to tell you something. I donât know how youâre going to react, but I need to tell you this.â
âWhat?â He hoped it was her name.
She toyed with the chain of her long necklace. âFirst you have to promise me youâll still treat me the same. I donât want anyone to think Iâm a woman.â
âIâll treat you as I always have.â He hoped he could keep his promise.
She gently tugged her necklace free, and she showed him the two charms hanging from the silver chain. It was like the past had leapt into the present, and Derekâs mind froze on the image of the sword charm and his ring.
He stared at her, and she blushed scarlet. Thatâs why her eyes had been haunting him, and thatâs why she was so nervous to tell him. Heâd already admitted he loved her. But why would that make her nervous? Unless she didnât feel the same about him as he did her.
âMegan.â Her name slipped from his lips, and he watched her nod. âWhy did you keep this from me?â
âYou told me you love me.â She whispered.
He felt like she was stomping his heart, and he closed his eyes. âYou donât feel the same about me.â He stood and grabbed his plate. âI understand.â He didnât. Theyâd met one night, and his whole world had changed. How could hers have not changed as drastically as his? It seemed impossible, but obviously she had not felt the connection as strong as he. To him, it was as if their lives were already threaded together, a tie which couldnât be broken.
âIâm sorry Derek.â Her voice lowered, and he still couldnât bring himself to look at her. âIt was one night, so long ago.â
âI understand.â He lied again. âI just thought we both felt the same connection that night.â
âI did feel something.â She admitted, and hope bloomed in his chest. âItâs just that Iâve been through a lot since, and I canât allow myself to fall in love with you.
